Written by E. Raymond Evans, this book is the well documented account of the African American Buffalo Solders that fought on the American western frontier. But it is their story of coming to Camp Thomas (Camp Chickamauga) in northwest Georgia, just south of Chattanooga, TN. It includes their transport to Cuba and Puerto Rico and covers their Spanish American War efforts. The wonderful African American history of this event is covered with authentic black and white pictures taken at the same events.
Gen. Boynton at Washington, D. C. stating that the Twenty-fifty Infantry, Col. Burt would command these black or colored soldiers. General Boynton was also involved. Major General Nelson A. Miles was quoted as saying that “Chickamauga is an excellent place for the concentration of a large body of troops and it is believed that that location has been seriously considered by Secretary [of War] Alger as a point for the preliminary gathering of troops in case of war."
The arrival of Major General John R. Brooke and the United States troops at Chickamauga Park was also important. Originally called camp Boynton, Gen. Brooke ordered that his headquarters be called ‘Camp Thomas,’ in honor of ‘The Rock of Chickamauga.
Colonel Theodore Roosevelt and the charge of his “Rough Riders” up San Jaun Hill was involved but learn what his roll was with these black soldiers.
