The book deals with the battle of Fort McCook in Marion County, Tennessee that led up the Confederate invasion of Kentucky and the well known Battle of Perryville in 1862. Written by E. Raymond Evans.
After the capture of Forts Henry and Donnelson in early 1862, General Grant continued south toward Corinth, Mississippi, and defeated a large Confederate army in the battle of Shiloh. After two days of hard fighting, the Confederate army, under the command of Braxton Bragg, withdrew south into Mississippi and made their way east to Chattanooga, Tennessee. On August 26, 1862, Colonel Harris was ordered to remove all stores from Bridgeport. He did so, and also brought the infantry companies back to Fort McCook. The next morning, on August 27, Colonel Harris received the information that the enemy was crossing the Tennessee River at Bridgeport. He ordered his cavalry to the scene, "with instructions that if the enemy had crossed to attack him at once, and if possible to drive him into the Tennessee River." Important places and people in this battle were Fort McCook, Marion County, Tennessee, Confederate invasion of Kentucky, Battle of Perryville in 1862, Civil War in Marion County, Chattanooga, Federal General Ormsby B. Mitchel, Confederate Army of Tennessee, General Braxton Bragg, Nickajack Cave, Confederate General John Adams, General James Negley, Winchester, Jasper, General Don Carlos Buell, and General Alexander McCook.
