This is the small book dealing with the battle of Glass’s Mill which led up to the better known Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863. Written by E. Raymond Evans.
By the second week of September, 1863, the Confederate Army of Tennessee, under General Braxton Bragg, was largely consolidated on the east side of the Creek, while the Federal Army of the Cumberland, commanded by General William S. Rosecrans, was still widely scattered. West Chickamauga Creek formed a major obstacle between the two forces. Bragg needed to control some of the crossing points in order to attack Rosecrans before the Federals could get back to Chattanooga. Rosecrans hoped to consolidate his forces in the vicinity of Lee and Gordon’s Mills near the crossing of the Lafayette road over the creek. To protect his men while marching north, Rosecrans sought to cover all the likely crossings south of Lee and Gordon’s Mills. An important one of these was Glass’s Mill ford near the mill.
Other relevant places and people were Chickamauga Creek, General Rosecrans. Lee and Gordon’s Mills, Glass’s Mill, Uncle Dick Glenn and his wife “Aunt” Jane. Colonel Sidney M. Barnes, Third Brigade of Van Cleve’s Division, Missionary Ridge to Chattanooga Valley, Pigeon Mountain, General Van Cleve, Major-General John C. Breckinridge, General Palmer, General Crook, General Longstreet, and General Benjamin Helm.
